Five tricks to make Preschoolers learn numbers quickly

Being a preschool educator since last five years i have come across many kids having difficulty in
learning numbers, from learning forward backward counting to learning skip numbers and missing
numbers.But what is the best method to make them learn, my experience says not making them
learn at all.
I have penned down effective exercises to make preschoolers understand the concept of numbers.
It is not o make them learn numbers by heart but it is for them to understand what numbers mean.
We have been effectively using these exercises.

1.Number Rhymes:for preschoolers these rhymes are very useful to learn numbers.
One such Nursery rhyme is ‘one two buckle my shoe’ other one is ‘one little Indian’ this particular
rhyme is useful for memorizing ascending and descending numbers which are useful even later.

One little, two little, three little Indians
Four little, five little, six little Indians
Seven little, eight little, nine little Indians
Ten little Indian boys.

Ten little, nine little, eight little Indians
Seven little, six little, five little Indians
Four little, three little, two little Indians
One little Indian boy

One, two,
Buckle my shoe;
Three, four,
Knock at the door;
Five, six,
Pick up sticks;
Seven, eight,
Lay them straight:
Nine, ten,
A big fat hen;
Eleven, twelve,
Dig and delve;
Thirteen, fourteen,
Maids a-courting;
Fifteen, sixteen,
Maids in the kitchen;
Seventeen, eighteen,
Maids in waiting
Nineteen, twenty,
My plate's empty.

2.Bucket with Balls: for learning numbers a bucket filled with small plastic or rubber balls can be
used when a child is asked to count the number of balls in the basket.Later on they are asked to
give a particular number of balls or given more balls to learn addition and subtraction.

3.Counting:child should learn proper counting from 1 to 1oo, forward as well as backwards which
helps later in writing missing numbers ascending and descending numbers as well.

4.Rubber Stamps: The most important job of an educator is to make learning as interesting
as possible.We keep cute small stamps of various objects such as flowers and fruits and
colourful inks to make counting interesting on paper.

5.Practice Sheets:Practice does make a man perfect same goes with the kids and numbers.
We make interesting colourful worksheets with various cartoons to make kids practice at home
each concept multiple times.These worksheets are available free of cost online.

At the end i would like to add that now with so many children in classrooms we cannot depend
on only schooling for our children, we have to take care and teach our children in language they
can understand easily.Each child is special in his own way its for us to understand what he or she
is special in and nurture them to attain their full potential.
